The right school environment and experience can make a fundamental difference in the wellbeing of every single student. Social-emotional learning initiatives, pastoral care networks, and safeguarding practices can create positive change and impact in every layer of the school experience. However, adequately addressing various dimensions of wellbeing—including psychological safety, digital wellbeing, physical wellbeing, and academic engagement—poses a challenge.

Facilitating wellbeing support at both a school-wide, year/grade and individual level in a timely and proactive manner can be challenging. Pastoral care is a huge undertaking for staff, and, understandably, very few schools can facilitate consistent personal check-ins with every student. Here at Komodo, we are passionate about equipping schools with the data that makes wellbeing issues easily identifiable. Komodo Wellbeing's intelligent check-in system and data-driven insights enable staff to make positive and effective interventions that are backed by real-time data.

At Komodo, our 2024 goal was to continue to grow our impact, helping more schools begin or enhance their wellbeing journeys, and to give more students a safe channel where they can open up about their wellbeing. The global conversation about wellbeing has continued to evolve this year. Key trends include: increasing concerns regarding the rise of AI technology, the effects of social media on sleep and mental health, climate change and political anxiety. At Komodo, we have observed an ongoing commitment from schools to improve their approach to student and staff wellbeing. Many educators are advocating for innovative approaches to better identify, address and manage student wellbeing. As we approach the end of 2024, it's a fitting time to reflect on everything we’ve learned from working with schools all over the world.

Komodo has made a significant difference to the way our staff are able to reach every single child and to close the gaps as necessary. One particular example was identifying the inadequate hours of sleep in our teens and ensuring that we conducted sleep hygiene workshops and sleep journals for students to self-monitor and improve their quality of sleep” - Asha Alexander, Principal and CEO of GEMS Legacy School, Dubai.

In the past 12 months, schools across 23 countries have sent out over 1.2 million wellbeing surveys via the Komodo Platform. From these surveys, the Komodo platform has generated:

Just over 36,000 total wellbeing check-ins were prompted from the Komodo platform. Each of these has provided an opportunity for teachers to be informed of a student’s need for support in a proactive manner. Of this over 5,900 were student-requested check-ins, meaning students initiated their journey for support and used the Komodo platform to ask their teachers for additional help. An almost 3x increase on our 2023 data. This increase is a brilliant indication of the growth of Komodo into more schools across the globe and students using their voice, taking charge of their wellbeing and using Komodo to expand their wellbeing practices

Komodo offers students a chance to provide additional context on their wellbeing by leaving comments in the feed section. We have observed a significant increase in the number of wellbeing comments left in the feed. The number of comments has risen from 32,000 in 2023 to just over 77,000 in 2024. It is great to see so many students using the feed feature to connect further with their teachers.

Since implementing Komodo, we have used it effectively as a vehicle to drive rich and meaningful conversations with students - enabling home group teachers to support students in navigating their challenges and also provide resources to their wellbeing toolkit.” - Andrew Mittiga, Student Wellbeing Coordinator, Wilderness School, Australia.

This year, we expanded our activities from simply attending events to hosting our own with the goal of meeting more schools in person around the world to truly support and empower their wellbeing journeys . We organized events in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, and Bangkok, featuring speakers from local schools and other wellbeing service providers, such as Mind Your Health and the Komodo team. A big thank you to the more than 450 educators who attended these events, creating a brilliant community of staff dedicated to improving wellbeing in their schools!

The Komodo team also attended several conferences hosted by various outstanding schools and partner organisations. Connecting with school staff in person, beyond our support calls, is always a rewarding experience. This year has provided us with the opportunity to better engage with our global community, allowing us to enhance our support for educators and students.

It has been a fantastic year of growth for Komodo, highlighted by the launch of our new Staff Wellbeing product. We have also introduced several exciting new features, including multi-language support, improved data export functions, new integrations, and a check-in note-taking feature. This feature includes prompts written by our psychology team to ensure all follow-up notes are structured for effective safeguarding practices.

Our team now includes members based in Dubai and London, and we have also expanded in Christchurch and wider New Zealand. None of this progress would have been possible without the support of our incredible team, the educators who trust us, and the students who inspire us every day - thank-you. Together, we are building a future where wellbeing is at the heart of education. Here is to more positive wellbeing awareness in 2025!
